ASUCSB Funding

 

Once approved for funding:

The Green Bill:

Associated Students has demonstrated its role as a campus leader in sustainability through its strong purchasing standards, and the willingness of students and staff within AS to further educate themselves about how to reduce their environmental impact. The Green Bill mandates eco-friendly spending of student fees.

 

Summarized Measures of the AS Green Bill:

Ongoing consumables (low value products that are regularly utilized and replaced)

-Must always be purchased from expressly environmentally conscious vendors

all paper purchased must be made from at least 30% recycled content

-At least 50% of paper purchased must be Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified must be purchased from a locally owned business or produced within 500 miles of UCSB (*See below for the A.S. Green Bill’s definition of “local”)

-The UCSB Bookstore is a locally owned business!

-The sustainable options for batteries (rechargeable), toner cartridges and office supplies (including binders) must be purchased instead of their unsustainable alternatives.

 

Food and serving ware

-50% of the total food and beverage purchase for any meeting/event must be organic, locally grown/produced or purchased from a locally owned business. Otherwise, food and beverage purchases must meet at least one of the other five sustainable criteria mentioned in the Financial Code. *See below for the A.S. Green Bill’s definition of “local”

-No styrofoam purchases

-All disposable serving ware purchases must be compostable

-Purchase of reusable serving ware for A.S. organizations and offices is encouraged

-Plastic water bottles must not be purchased for meeting or events with fewer than 200 attendees

 

Durable goods (high value products that are regularly utilized but replaced less frequently)

-Must be ENERGY STAR® rated or have at least a bronze registration under the

Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT)

-Energy conservation features on electronic equipment must be activated

-Battery or corded equipment must replace gas­powered equipment where feasible

Furniture

-Salvaged, refurbished, or used furniture must be purchased before new furniture

-New furniture must be locally produced or purchased from a locally owned business.

Otherwise, new furniture must meet at least one of the other six sustainable criteria

*The A.S. Green Bill defines local products as products that are produced or sold from a business owned within a 500 mile radius of Santa Barbara (100 mile radius when pertaining to food).
